QUALIFYING CRITERIA

The decision was made not to have a specific number of neuters and adults, but much rather to have the top cats qualify, whether neuter or adult, to compete for SA Indie Cat.

Further to the above, the decision was also made that should an exhibitor that has qualified not be able to attend, that we will not go down to the next exhibitor in line.

Our objective is to have the top cats that have qualified to compete for SA Indie Cat.

Should there be 2 or more cats with the same number of points on the threshold, then all those on that point threshold will qualify to compete for SA Indie Cat.

If you started showing your kitten at the 1st Show of the SA Indie Cat show season which starts in September, and your kitten gained points at this show and continues to gain points up until the age of 10 months at subsequent shows but turns one year during the show season, and should your cat qualify at the end of the  SA Indie Cat show season then your cat will qualify to be judged in the relevant Adult/ Neuter section. In essence, your kitten/ cat does not lose its points or space due to being over one year of age at the time of the SA Indie Cat event.

You will receive an official invite to the event, and which cat/s have qualified.

2nd place cat gets 19 points, all the way down to number 20 who will get 1 point.

• The judge’s decision will be final and cannot be contested or disputed in any way.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

You can simply find out where there is an Independent Club show being held anywhere in South Africa:

Enter your cat for the show

(your cat can be registered with any of the registering bodies in South Africa)

(do not have to be a member of any of the Independent clubs in South Africa)

(adhere to the particular clubs show rules for the particular show)

(we uphold strict showing standards and you must be in good standing in the cat fancy, not have any discrepancies or current unresolved disputes with any of the other organizations in South Africa, neither with any one of the Independent Clubs)

OUR ETHOS

SA Indie Cat’s main focus is to stand for fairness striving for the highest ethics possible, respecting both exhibitors, breeders and their cats as well as the officiating judges or officials.

But most important SA Indie Cat will stand for CELEBRATING CATS AND THEIR BEAUTY-

sharing what cats give us each and every day and that is unconditional love, affection and of course playfulness.

AWARDS

• The Top Neuter Male, Top Neuter Female, Top Adult Male and Top Adult Female will compete for the Overall SA Indie Cat crown.

SA Indie Cat crown. We intend to make this process super exciting which entails live judging in the typical Independent format of ring judging at the awards luncheon by a nominated Head Judge.

• SA Indie Cat Domestic of the Year

• SA Indie Kitten of the Year

• Highest Scoring Longhair Cat of the Year. This will be determined from the show seasons points

• Highest Scoring Semi Longhair Cat of the Year. This will be determined from the show seasons points

• Highest Scoring Shorthair Cat of the Year. This will be determined from the show seasons points

• Highest Scoring Siamese/ Oriental Cat of the Year. This will be determined from the season’s points.

• Highest Scoring Domestic. Companion Cat of the Year. This will be determined from the show seasons points.

• SA Indie Cat Legend of the Year. A special award that will be awarded to a cat that is older, has performed well over numerous years of showing, a cat that has left it’s pawprint on the show bench. The cat could be retired and no longer on the show circuit.

Will be a nominee award. A cat only achieves this once in a lifetime and will carry this honour for all time.

If a cat has not been nominated in a particular year for some or other reason,

then this award will not be awarded.

•  SA Indie Cat Ultimate Master of the Rings. An award that will go to a cat that has performed exceptionally well throughout the show season in the rings show system. Points will be used to determine this award.

If an exhibitor cannot be present, the award or title will still be acknowledged.

It feels unfair to withhold awarding the cats that have qualified due to not being able to attend the actual SA Indie Event show. The cat will not be placed but will receive a certificate of acknowledgement.

All Qualifying cats will receive the letters (NQ) after their names on the database and will appear on any future pedigrees.

The points system may be amended slightly in the future in order to alleviate issues or any irregularities that may crop up.

The Adele Visser Memorial Award for Best Maine Coon- an award for the Best Maine Coon that has achieved well throughout the current show season. An award that is in memory of the late Adele Visser whose first love was the Maine Coon breed. Adele Visser passed away in December 2025.
